After 11 years straight inside the frontier AI labs, I am spending some time working as an independent researcher in New York City.

Previously, I was at OpenAI, where I made individual contributions across the deep learning stack. I started on post-training as part of the small team that created ChatGPT . I later shifted to mid-training execution as overall tech lead of GPT-4o mini , and then pre-training team science, co-leading the GPT-4o pretraining bigrun. In my last act at OpenAI, I had the pleasure of innovating on architecture research, landing an inference efficiency win in collaboration with the London unit of OpenAI’s Training team, of which I was TLM.

Sep. 2015 – May 2022

DeepMind is where I came of age as a researcher. I was the padawan of Alex Graves, who is a rare jedi of the field. This almost became formalized with a PhD at University College London, where I was co-advised by Alex, Oriol Vinyals, and Marc Deisenroth. I dropped out before completing the PhD.
